However, their frost-proof nature depends on proper care and conditions. To ensure your Bergs pot lasts through the winter, you must take proper precautions against water freezing inside it.
Key care instructions for frost protection
- Ensure proper drainage: Do not let the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot become clogged. If water accumulates and freezes, the expansion can cause the pot to crack.
- Elevate your pot: Use pot feet, small rocks, or wooden blocks to raise the pot at least 2 cm off the ground. This allows excess water to drain away before it freezes.
- Remove saucers: Take off the saucer during the winter months so that water doesn't pool and freeze underneath the pot.
- Insulate larger pots: In areas with extreme cold, consider adding an insulating layer of bubble wrap, fleece, or burlap around larger pots for extra protection.
