Shumatsu means "weekend" in Japanese — but these will work just as well on a Tuesday. Made by a small family blacksmithing business in Hyogo Prefecture, an area with centuries of blade-making tradition, the Shumatsu has SK-85 carbon steel blades and satisfyingly dimpled aluminium handles that feel purposeful and reassuring in the hand. Light enough for cut flowers and houseplants, capable enough for general garden pruning. The kind of tool that earns its permanent spot on the potting bench and never gets put away.

Keep your secateurs in top shape by cleaning thoroughly removing things such as leaf resin or rust, sharpening with a #1000 grit stone, protecting with Camellia Oil, and store dry. Avoid cutting anything too tough, your hands (and your secateurs) will thank you.
